I posted on Growing social networks about gig workers last week.
Personally, I didn’t know what was the meaning and couldn’t find articles in spanish, but i did found a lot of information available in english, specifically referring to the “gig economy,” that is, a new economy that is influenced by a new profile that is coming up in the labor market.
The #gig economy comes to contextualize in the fourth industrial revolution, since today we have a better internet connection as well as mobile work spaces that have favored the technology development; under this concept, the idea that #freelance workers can be more profitable for companies begins to be outlined.
Do you use UBER? Did you booked through Airbnb? If your answer is #yes, we can affirm that you belong to the #gigeconomy
Internet and technology rise has favored the context for freelance profiles who decided to work 100% autonomously, so that a #gig worker has no formal agreements with any organization, being fully responsible for their income, taxes and daily responsibilities. In this way, we can think about the flexibility that being offer to companies by the gig economy, since they can mix and match the skills and services they need, between full-time workers and freelance staff. Flexibility is the key?
It is real that today, this work style is visualized as an additional economic income and not as an additional income, but … What are the benefits? #flexibility of the freelancer to choose their work time and the project / task on which to work; The organization has the resources specifically when it needs them. #economic the freelancer quits to transportation expenses, food and other workday outlays, while the organization invests only in the service saving infrastructure expenses, permissions, etc. #time the freelancer can choose the time of this work modality, not only the task time; specific talent would by taken as an advantage by the organization allowing itself to omit selection and training processes.
Being a #gigworker is a new working way, but it isn’t the only one nor should it be. I’ve met people who’d their work experience with me, mentioning their interest in continuing to be dependent workers and it is just fine. Just as the different generations coexist in a company, they are also beginning to live different work modalities: full-time staff, part-time staff, remote work staff, and gig workers!
What work style would you place yourself in? Are you a gig worker?
